چکیده

We read with interest the recent report by Wartenberg et al. (1) in which they described an “ad hoc system” and “meta-analysis–type approach” for evaluating the carcinogenicity of trichloroethylene (TCE). In particular, we are concerned that their methods may obscure rather than clarify the relationship between TCE and human cancer. Briefly, Wartenberg et al. (1) categorized studies on the basis of their design: cohort, case–control, community-based, and case series. Cohort studies were then divided “into three tiers based on the specificity of the exposure information” contained in each. Next, the authors estimated the average relative risk for each tier, which was calculated using

Occupational trichloroethylene exposure and kidney cancer risk: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES Inconsistent epidemiological findings, debate over interpretation, and extrapolation of findings from animal studies to humans have produced uncertainty surrounding the carcinogenicity of trichloroethylene (TCE) exposure in occupational settings. We updated meta-analyses of published case-control and cohort studies exploring occupational TCE exposure and kidney cancer risk, incorpora...

Human Health Effects of Trichloroethylene: Key Findings and Scientific Issues

BACKGROUND In support of the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) completed a toxicological review of trichloroethylene (TCE) in September 2011, which was the result of an effort spanning > 20 years. OBJECTIVES We summarized the key findings and scientific issues regarding the human health effects of TCE in the U.S. EPA's toxicological revi...

Trichloroethylene (TCE)

Current evaluation Conclusion from the previous Monograph: Trichloroethylene (TCE) is probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A) based on limited evidence in humans for the carcinogenicity of TCE and sufficient evidence in experimental animals for the carcinogenicity of TCE. In making the overall evaluation, the Working Group considered the following evidence: (i) although the hypothesis linkin...

بررسی کارایی نانو ذرات آهن صفر ظرفیتی در تخریب تری کلرو اتیلن از محیط آبی

Introduction and purpose: The release of chlorinated organic compounds (COCs) is accounted as a danger for public health and environment due to their harmful effects such as carcinogenicity, toxicity, and flammability. Trichlorethylene (TCE) is one of the most famous COCs, which is commonly used as a solvent for dry-cleaning and industrial degreasing and contaminates so...

Chemical structure, reactivity, and carcinogenicity of halohydrocarbons.

This review summarizes studies concerning the covalent binding of [14C]TCE to rat liver microsomal protein and exogenous DNA, in vitro, the enhancement of this binding by inducers of mixed-function oxidases, and inhibition of binding by inhibitors of these enzymes. Furthermore, recent studies on this type of binding in various strains of mice and rats of both sexes and using microsomal preparat...
